Years on the Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour: New this year!

Showcase Feature

You have to see this astounding transformation to believe it. Jonathan Espalin, from Calvin Craig Landscaping, designed the new garden, replacing the formerly lawn-centered landscape with lush, mostly native plantings.  In the front garden, 1,000 square feet of turf was removed, and in its place are plants that provide year-round visual interest, and will also attract birds and butterflies.

The tranquil back garden, which formerly consisted of a lot of lawn and ivy, is the showstopper here. Now, under the ancient oaks, woodland plants such as ferns, coffeeberry, flowering currant, yerba buena, and coral bells, create a lush feel. Inviting stone pathways, benches, fire ring, and a patio define the outdoor living space and create areas for entertainment and relaxation.  Enjoy a stroll along the seasonal creek, then drop down in one of the many seating areas and enjoy this garden; you won’t want to leave.

Other Garden Attractions

  • The old fence was replaced with an “invisible” deer fence near the creek to connect the garden to the woodland beyond.
  • Be sure the check out the “before” and “after” pictures.
  • Fallen leaves are left on the ground to help suppress weeds, create habitat for wildlife, and improve the soil.
  • The designer, Jonathan Espalin, will be at this garden all day to answer questions about the design, construction, and management of the garden.

Gardening for Wildlife

Migratory songbirds pass through the garden. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are attracted to the sunny front garden.  It is hoped that salamanders and snakes will be attracted by the planting and mulching.
