Talks in the Nursery

Saturday May 2, 2020
12:00
“Come learn about the best native plants for attracting butterflies and other pollinators” by Pete Veilleux

At noon, Pete will be giving a short talk on the plants that will bring butterflies and other pollinators to your garden. A display of these plants will be set up for you to browse throughout the day.

Watch this video of a Douglas Tallamy talk that will change the way you think about gardening:

Plants that butterflies and moths can lay their eggs on (‘larval host plants’) include oaks, lupine, manzanitas, currants, sages and more. Did you know that the babies of most birds require caterpillars while in the nest? Baby birds do not eat seeds, or berries, or sugar water. Butterflies and moths will only lay their eggs on a very few types of plants—without those plants we won’t have butterflies—or baby birds. Check out the list of larval host plants on the Tour’s website, plant some in your garden, and rejoice when you see caterpillars!

The list of native plants that butterflies and moths can lay their eggs on is here, right under the video.

East Bay Wilds carries the largest selection of California native plants in the Bay Area.  In addition to providing local native plants, East Bay Wilds provides plants from across the State which have proven useful in the local landscape.  Owner Pete Veilleux keeps a good stock of proven natives which are particularly beautiful, reliable, and hard to find.  Some of these are extremely difficult to propagate and therefore hard to find elsewhere, and Pete maintains a waiting list for some of those plants.  He also carryies a wide selection of plants that he has experimented with and found useful for specific landscape problem areas, such as plants to grow between pavers, or fast groundcovers which can outpace weeds, and so on. Some of the special plants East Bay Wilds regularly carries are hummingbird sage, hound’s tongue, wooly mule’s ears, Island bush poppy, wooly blue curls, rare and beautiful ferns, Fremontodendrons, a fast-growing strain of western redbud, Sagehen strawberry, Barrie Coate flowering currants, fragrant golden currant, leafy reedgrass, burr marigold, purple three-awn, Marion Sampson hummingbird mint, Sonoma sage, Pickeringias (chapparal pea), Everett’s choice California fuchsia, prostrate coastal sage, many, many kinds of manzanitas, buckwheats, Ceanothus, penstemons, hybrid monkeyflowers, sedges, and a wide selection of sages.8076343430_c0bc804cd7_c

East Bay Wilds is located in the Fruitvale, which is home to many generations of Bay Area gardeners.  Pete has been purchasing interesting garden planters/containers, art, and antiques from locals for several years and he has a huge selection of them for sale at a wide range of prices.  If you are looking for a beautiful garden focalpoint, such as a bench, or pots, garden tables and chairs, statues, or a water feature, look at this collection. Pete’s well-known native containers—miniature landscapes—are on exhibit, and for sale or rent at reasonable prices. He also has a very nice demonstration garden and limited off-street parking.

Plant Help / Suggestions for your site

If you schedule an appointment in advance, and bring with you a good description and/or photos of your site, Pete can suggest plants for your particular site.  He has many repeat customers who express how well his suggestions have worked out for them.  Pete supplies plants to many professional native landscapers, as well as plant collectors and beginning native plant enthusiasts.
