Wendy Dutton and Mark Roberts' Garden

Oakland

Gardening experience: Two years at this location

Garden size: 5,000 square feet

Showcase feature: Large oaks and redwoods border this charming, eclectic garden, which was designed and installed by Mark and Wendy, owners of Roots and Shoots Landscaping. Native grasses, sages, and California lilac were planted on the shady slope under the oaks. The reduced lawn is bordered by English cottage garden beds created from ailing plants removed from other gardens and nursed back to health in a sunny spot in this vibrant garden.

Other garden attractions:

  • This beautiful garden was designed to providing plenty of play space for active children.
  • A variety of inviting seating areas are scattered about this spacious garden.
  • Plum tree limbs were used to retain soil on the slope.
  • Fallen leaves are left as mulch.

Gardening for Wildlife: Mature trees, bird baths and feeders, and native berry bushes provide food, shelter, and nesting areas for wildlife.
