Tracy D'Ambrosi's Garden
Piedmont
Gardening experience: The garden was transformed two years ago
Garden size: 25' x 20' square-foot back garden only on tour
Showcase feature: This small back garden was transformed by Greg Wolford of Californica Landscaping from an uninviting cement slope dominated by a non-native and messy black acacia into a charming outdoor living area with strong visual appeal. Native plants have held up "amazingly well" to the unintentional rough-housing caused by active children. Having no lawn works for this family. The beautiful cut-stone patio was designed and installed by Eric Larsen of Modern Stoneage.
Other garden attractions:
- The lush, serene and "ferny" feel is evoked by the woodland plants selected for the shady areas in this garden. The sunny side features native Channel Island plants, including the whimsical giant Coreopsis, and dramatic and colorful bush poppies.
- Easy-to-maintain densely planted garden beds wrap gently around the patio, providing additional seating where they are raised.
- Mulch prevents weeds and reduces water use. Seaweed solution is used as a fertilizer.
- Low maintenance was a key factor in the design of this compact garden.
- Visit Ben and Pat Dresser's Piedmont Garden (Tracy's Mom and Dad) just five minutes away.
Gardening for Wildlife: Hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and ladybugs find respite in this small space.
