Pete Veilleux is the owner of the East Bay Wilds Native Plant Nursery; he also designs, installs, and maintains California native plant gardens in residential and commercial landscapes.
Philosophy:
One of East Bay Wilds’ goals is to help people make the connection between their yards and the greater, wild world around us. Pete wants people to experience the beautiful harmony that he sees around him when exploring the woods, meadows, and high rocky outcrops around the Bay. He also want folks to recognize when this harmony is not present – when one or more non-native, invasive species has run amok and is destroying the harmony.
The Nursery The nursery is normally open by appointment only. Call (510) 932-4021 to set up a time when you can browse among the four hundred species of native plants Pete grows, including dozens of types of manzanitas, a variety of ferns, wooly blue curls, many types of buckwheats, our local bush poppy, chaparral pea, several kinds of goldenbushes, numerous kinds of asters, and a wide selection of California lilacs. Pete has also amassed a huge collection of garden statues, bird baths, garden benches, and other focal points—from fine antiques to funny kitsch; all of the garden art is for sale. From downtown Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco: Take 580 east to Fruitvale Ave. Go right on Fruitvale one mile to Foothill Blvd., then go right on Foothill one long block to 28th Ave. Turn left on 28th Ave; the entrance is immediately on your right.
From points east of Oakland: Take 580 west to the Coolidge Ave. exit. Go left on Coolidge 1 mile to Foothill Blvd., turn right on Foothill and continue two blocks to 28th Ave. Turn left on 28th Ave.; the entrance is immediately on your right.
From points south of Oakland: Take 880 north to the 29th Ave. and exit at Fruitvale Ave. Take a slight right onto 29th Ave. and turn left on International Blvd. Take the first right onto 28th Ave. and stay on it until you arrive at the nursery on your left. (Where 28th Ave. ends on Foothill Blvd.)
